Just like humans, our canine friends also have a number of stimuli that may cause them to be scared. Whether it’s a large truck driving by or loud thunder, your dog may exhibit signs of fear. Although we may find the cause of fear to be strange and weird, our four-legged friends may find this to be very unsettling.

From weather changes to loud noises or even being around other pets and animals, all these will contribute to the fear your dog is showing. Because they are unable to ‘verbally’ tell us why they are scared, it is our duty to understand why they are upset and to keep them safe and secure.

Just what Dr. Peter L. Borchelt of the Animal Behaviorist Consultants in Brooklyn, N.Y. recommended, to help our dogs minimize their fears, we can subject them to desensitization. The program has to be done at home, consistently and compassionately.

Desensitization is a process where your dog is exposed to a stimulus starting at a very low intensity. One type of desensitization is the use of nature CDs for dogs that are scared of sounds produced by thunderstorms. Make your dog feel safe and secure by sitting with him while the CD plays. You can slowly increase the volume once he or she is comfortable.

Common causes of canine fears

Among the most common cause of canine fears are the extremely loud noises present in everyday surroundings. Bursting balloons, and the phone and doorbell ringing are just a few examples of loud sounds that dogs are getting scared over.

Thankfully, these fears can be eliminated by gently introducing your dog to these objects that he fears. You can make the introduction a pleasurable experience by giving him extra attention or treatment.

Although overcoming a certain fear can be difficult, with patience and consistency, it can be eradicated. Indeed, it is time-consuming but inexpensive and the result is definitely worth it. What’s more, the process may just be a way to increase the bond between you and your dog.

Make it a positive experience.

To prevent fear from developing in the first place, let your dog be exposed to the world. The best time to do this is when they’re puppies. According to Dr. Borchelt, exposing them to the outside environment at a young age will help them adjust easily than exposing them later on.

Play dates, going to the park, and lots of walking with route changes from time to time are some of the things you can do to expose your pet while having a great time. This will definitely make your four-legged friend get used to the world around them.

Desensitization should be a fun, positive and learning experience. By incorporating praise and treats, as well as giving your canine friend the security they need, you can help them overcome their fears effectively.

In the event that you adopted an older dog, it is not too late to use desensitization. Patience and consistency are the keys to help your pet overcome their fears from everyday things.
