Whenever there is a hurricane, we try to prepare ourselves by stocking on food and supplies and even consider evacuating to a safer place. Hurricanes are so destructive that it can potentially destroy an entire house if it’s not sturdy enough.

Hurricane Dorian is deemed to be one of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded. It caused billions of dollars in damages and even caused death. However, one woman faced the hurricane head-on and refused to leave her home to save dogs.

Chella Phillips lives in the Bahamas. During the hurricane, she opened her doors to help nearly a hundred dogs. When the storm headed to the island, Chella knew that the stray dogs have nowhere safe to go.

As an animal rights advocate, Chella runs a nonprofit organization that helps stray dogs on the island. Her organization is called The Voiceless Dogs Of Nassau, Bahamas. She rescues and provides shelter for homeless dogs and pair them to a family willing to adopt a dog from the island.

Chella decided to open her home to the island strays. Before the storm reached the island, she gathered ninety-seven dogs in total and let them stay inside her house. She even allowed seventy-nine of the dogs to stay in her bedroom.

Chella didn’t mind the animals defecating and urinating inside her home. All she cared about was that they were safe and that they aren’t outside during the hurricane. She posted several photos of the dogs inside her home in her social media account.

Her post went viral, and people started helping out. Some people donated crates for the frightened ones to stay in. Chella’s home eventually lost power due to the hurricane. Water also entered the house, but they were all fine. The house was sturdy enough that it was able to withstand the powerful winds. Other homes were not as lucky.

Chella raised over a hundred thousand dollars to support her cause. She initially hoped to raise twenty thousand dollars, but thanks to her post, people rallied and decided to support her. Chella’s organization has since paired over a thousand dogs to good homes in the United States. Here’s a remarkable video of how Chella helped the stray dogs during one of the most powerful hurricanes to ever hit the Bahamas.
