Sarge is a German Shepherd who lives with his family in Ohio. The trees surrounding their house are home to all sorts of wildlife, specifically deers. This is why he doesn’t react violently whenever he would see them.

The first time Sarge had the chance to see a deer up close was when his fur mom, Cheryl Stephen, brought one home. The fawn is an orphan named Buckwheat. She felt bad when she saw the poor thing in the woods, so she decided to open the doors of her home to him.

Albeit hesitant at first, Cheryl knew that leaving Buckwheat alone in the woods was not an option. He was still too young then, and he didn’t have the ability to find food for himself. She figured, by letting him stay at their home, she could keep an eye on him.

The fluffy babysitter

Cheryl took her sweet time in introducing Buckwheat to Sarge. She wanted to make sure that the two animals would get along since they’d be living under one roof. She was surprised when, during the introduction, Sarge moved closer to Buckwheat and licked him.

The gentle German Shepherd eventually became the orphaned fawn’s babysitter. They’d do all sorts of activities together. Cheryl would see them playing, eating, cuddling, and sleeping together. It was clear that both animals enjoyed being part of each other’s lives.

Parting ways

Unfortunately, when Buckwheat got older, Sarge had to say goodbye to him. The deer had to be released back to the woods since that’s where his real home is. Sarge was bummed about it, but he knew that letting Buckwheat go would save his life.

So, to cope with the feeling of missing his friend, Sarge went on to babysit other injured and orphaned fawns. His experience with Buckwheat allowed him to be the best babysitter they could ever have!
