Every shelter dog wants to have a home and a family of their own. And that’s exactly what Chubbs wants. It’s been over three years since he stepped foot at the Texas animal shelter. Despite what’s already a long wait, the sweet pup isn’t losing hope that someday, he too, will go home.

Chubbs was only a year old when he found himself at the Austin Pets Alive! an animal shelter in Texas. Among the other dogs, he has had the longest stay at the center. Now, he’s already four years old. Most of the pup’s adult life was spent inside a kennel instead of a loving home.

Hundreds of dogs have been adopted at APA! And Chubbs have watched every one of them leave their kennels. He must be wondering when he’d finally get the chance to be with his new family.

With the amount of time he had already spent waiting, anyone might think he has become dejected, miserable. But his friends know otherwise. “He wants to go home,” said Rona Distenfeld, Chubb’s trainer.

The APA team makes certain that Chubbs doesn’t stay inside his kennel most of the day. He has been joining training classes to keep him busy. In fact, he gets an A on most of the programs.

Chubbs is one smart dog who likes having his brain to work, said Carrie Defeo, program co-manager at APA. He absolutely has skills. He follows basic commands with little to no repetition, walks steadily on a lead, stays calm as other dogs or people approach, and goes to specific places when asked to. He’s even undergoing agility training.

Chubbs’ trainers prefer a fenced-in yard but an apartment may also work fine. He’s at his best with individuals he has bonded with and loves to be with adults most of the time. His trainers would like to show his adoptive family what he has learned so it’s better if they reside within 40 miles from the shelter.

Until the best possible family comes forward, Chubbs will be staying with his friends at APA. Everyone wishes that soon, he’ll permanently leave his kennel to be in his forever home. But no matter how soon or long it may still take, Chubbs will definitely never ran out of love coming from his shelter family and friends.
