There are several dogs in dog shelters of the United States that need a loving home. Military veterans, meanwhile, need a loyal companion in dogs. One of the problems in dog adoption is that there are fees involved. While it is minimal, some veterans could not afford these fees.

This is the reason why California will soon waive dog adoption fees if veterans decide to adopt. Californian legislators look to hasten the passing of this bill at least before January ends. One of the proponents of this bill is State Senator Ling Ling Chang.

Known as Senate Bill 245, the bill will make every veteran’s dream of having a dog a reality. Chang said she authored the law so that animal shelters will follow the waiving of the adoption fees. Governor Gavin Newsom supported Chang’s bill as the Governor sees the need for the implementation of such.

Chang, in an interview, said that the support from Governor Gavin is a big win for both dogs and veterans in California. She believes that the brave heroes of California deserve to be rewarded.

Under the proposed bill, for a veteran to get the fee waived, he or she must prove his or her identity. The best proof would be the driver’s license of the veteran. When the veteran submits all the needed documents, he or she can now bring the dog home. Chang, however, clarified that the bill is not solely for dogs. Cats are also covered by the same law because there are veterans who prefer cats as their pets.

Chang hopes that this bill will inspire other states to waive their adoption fees for veterans. She said that it would be a win-win both for the animal shelters and the potential adopters.
