A 190-pound dog recently went viral for being the subject of an unforgettable rescue.
Floyd, a Mastiff, and his owners enjoyed a weekend hike in Utah. The walk proved to be more than what the Mastiff can handle. Floyd became too exhausted to continue the trail that he needed to be rescued to continue their descent.
According to Shawn Kenney, squad leader of Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit, Floyd was very tired when they found him. Kenney’s unit, consists of volunteers, received a report that a dog needed assistance for descent at the Grandeur Peak Trail in the mountains on the outskirts of Salt Lake City. Floyd and his owners took a different route for their descent and found the particular trail to be steep.
Floyd did not conquer the difficult path and just gave up. According to his owners, he just flopped on the ground, exhausted. Kenney said Floyd suffered from wounds on his paw, but it is the exhaustion that made him quit the hike down. Aside from the challenging trail, his massive weight was too much to bear.
Floyd’s owner could not find any means to transport the massive dog. Another problem was the lack of cellphone service, so they could not contact anyone just yet. The rest of Floyd’s owner decided to continue the trek while one of them stayed behind with Floyd.
When rescuers arrived, they assessed Floyd for any severe injuries. Thankfully, aside from a few scratches and cuts, Floyd was okay. He also looked calm as the volunteers helped him into a litter with wheels. For some time, the litter worked alright, up until the wheels broke. They decided to just carry him.
Kenney said Floyd enjoyed the rest of the descent time. He said the dog just sat there, in a chill state, and enjoyed the rest of the ride. Now, Floyd has recovered from his minor wounds and dehydration. His owners and the volunteers advise the public about the precautions of bringing a massive Mastiff on a hike. Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit reminds owners to bring a wagon along to be sure!
